In a remote lagoon in the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies the greatest concentration of World War II shipwrecks on the planet. Today, the Chuuk Islands are a backwater, but in 1944 they played a central role in Japanese Naval operations in the Pacific, until the US assault Operation Hailstone. In just two days, American planes sunk around 40 Japanese ships at their anchorages. Today, most of the ships lie intact on the seabed, alongside wreckage of crashed fighter planes and even submarines. Ghostly ship corridors lead to engine rooms, cabins and abandoned bridges, their controls untouched. On land, bunkers and even the airfield command centre remain eerily unscathed, gradually becoming engulfed by the surrounding landscape. Taking a deeper look at the major shipwrecks, and their poignant and intriguing histories, we tell the tale of this ghost fleet of the Pacific.
