One might be forgiven for thinking prison is as low as things can sink for Criminal Barrister Cleaver Greene. But when we rejoin our silver-tongued hero, things are heading south again.
He emerges, blinking in the sunlight of newfound freedom and unaffected confidence, a legal pariah. Clients are rejecting him and he struggles to find anything resembling a case. He takes on a mid-range drink driving charge that he tries to make into a cause célèbre but which ultimately gives him little to celebrate.
When Scarlet offers him the chance to be her Junior it causes obvious tension but is Cleaver’s chance of redemption – at least in the legal sense – and he does so with aplomb.
This series is the story of Cleaver fighting to re-establish himself; a reaffirmation that is despite himself and his new and somewhat bizarre circumstances. Before long, there is corruption at corporate and government levels, and the excessive use of illegal substances. There is a faux heist, a faux cancer and two very real Royal Commissions. And, of course, the constant fear that he’ll mess up the whole thing royally.
But perhaps the highest stakes of all come from within Cleaver’s own family, as he has to save his wife and son from dangers on every side.
How will our legal alchemist reinvent himself this time? And will it finally bring them back together as a family?
Meanwhile Barney and Nicole are on their own voyage of recovery. Scarlet and David start playing Words With Friends but soon become something more. Missy is mad at Cleaver but even they threaten to cross the emotional Rubicon.
In yet another unique series, Rake 3 brings us a slightly adulterated but still fundamentally wicked Cleaver Greene.
