International distributor DCD Rights has agreed a deal with Universal Media Studios International for the worldwide format rights to the award winning Australian drama series The Slap.

DCD Rights retains all the sales rights in the finished programme sales which it has so far sold to DIRECTV in the US, BBC Four in the UK, Sundance Channel Global for Asia, Eastern Europe, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Portugal, AMC/Sundance Channel Global, Globosat, Brazil, ARTE in France, SVT Sweden, NRK Norway, ARTE in France, YLE Finland and TVO Canada.

Produced by Matchbox Pictures for ABC Australia the 8×60′ mini-series based on the bestselling book by Christos Tsiolkas has been an international success, meeting critical acclaim and winning numerous awards and nominations around the world.

The Slap traces the shattering repercussions of a single event upon a group of family and friends. It is a searing and controversial portrait of middle-class life and the mores and morality that shape modern, multicultural Australia. The series stars Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda, Doctor Who) and Jonathan La Paglia (Cold Case, Bones).

Nicky Davies Williams, CEO, DCD Rights, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Universal Media Studios International on this significant deal for one of our finest drama series – The Slap has been a success as a finished programme and shows huge potential to achieve similar success as a format.”
